In 2026, the M1 MacBook Air is the best value in old Apple silicon, the M2 is good middle ground, and the M3 is the cheapest processor that powers every Apple Intelligence function. All three are still running macOS 27 Golden Gate. Purchase an M1 if you surf and write, and an M3 if you edit video or require the longest support runway.
Apple has sold five generations of Mac CPUs since 2020, with the M5 MacBook Air arriving in March 2026. That means the M1, M2, and M3 are now used-market machines, which makes this comparison much more important than it was when they were new. You are no longer deciding which to purchase at full price. You're debating how much to spend on a used one or whether the one on your desk is worth retaining.
Heartland Computer fix these machines every week at our Omaha and Council Bluffs locations, so this comparison covers what fails on each generation, not just what the spec sheet states.

How to check which chip your MacBook has
Click the Apple menu in the upper left corner and select About This Mac. Read the line underneath the model’s name. If it states Chip followed by "Apple M1", "Apple M2", or anything like, it means Apple Silicon. If it says Processor followed by an Intel Core name, you have an Intel Mac which is important in 2026. See the MacOS 27 section below.
The model identification (something like Mac14,2) appears in the same window under More Info, followed by System Report. That identity is required by a repair shop for ordering parts.
What changed between M1, M2 and M3
M1 (November 2020)
Apple's first Mac chip, developed on a 5-nanometer technology. An 8-core CPU divided into four performance and four efficiency cores, an 8-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine, and up to 16GB of unified memory with a bandwidth of about 68GB/s. It was the computer that made Intel Macs appear slow overnight, and six years later, it is still perfectly suitable for most people's needs.
M2 (June 2022)
An improved 5nm design rather than a new one. Around 18% higher CPU performance than the M1, up to a 10-core GPU that Apple assessed as 35% faster, a Neural Engine that is roughly 40% faster, and memory expandability to 24GB with bandwidth increased to 100GB/s. The M2 is an incremental chip. If you have an M1, the M2 was never an improvement worth paying for.
M3 (October 2023)
The first 3nm Mac chip and the first significant architectural change. The M3 is about 20% faster on the CPU than the M2, but the most notable upgrade is on the GPU: Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and mesh shading have arrived, allowing the M3 to handle 3D work and modern games in ways that the M1 and M2 cannot. The 3nm process is also cooler under sustained load.
Difference between the M2 and M3 chips, in one sentence
The M2 is a faster M1; the M3 is a different GPU architecture on a smaller process, which accounts for the M3's superior performance in graphics, ray tracing, and heat far beyond the CPU figures.
Where M4 and M5 sit
The M4 debuted in the MacBook Air in March 2025, with a 10-core CPU and 16GB of memory as standard, effectively ending the 8GB argument. The M5 MacBook Air was released in March 2026 on a third-generation 3nm technology, with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core, a third-generation ray-tracing engine, 153GB/s of memory bandwidth (28 percent greater than the M4), 512GB of basic storage, and Wi-Fi 7 via Apple's N1 wireless chip.
According to Apple, the M5 MacBook Air outperforms the M1 in AI video processing and 3D rendering with ray tracing, with speeds up to 6.9x faster. Those are significant gains, yet most individuals will never realize them when drafting an email.

macOS 27 Golden Gate: what each chip gets
macOS 27 Golden Gate was launched on September 14, 2026, and it is the first version of macOS that will not install on an Intel Mac. All Apple Silicon Macs are supported, including the original M1 MacBook Air from 2020.
There is one significant split. The latest Siri voice features, including more expressive voice and sophisticated dictation, require an M3 processor or newer and at least 12GB of memory. An M1 or M2 Mac can run macOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, but not both.
Is my Mac too old for macOS 27
All Apple Silicon Macs, including the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, are running macOS 27 Golden Gate. It cannot be installed on an Intel-based Mac. If About This Mac shows a Processor instead of a Chip, macOS 26 Tahoe is the final version.
If you have an Intel MacBook
Your machine will continue to operate and receive security updates for some time, but it will no longer receive new features or, eventually, updated versions of the software on which you rely. There are three options: keep it and suffer the gradual degradation, upgrade to Apple Silicon and migrate your data, or repurpose it. We perform Intel-to-Apple-Silicon migrations at both of our locations; the most typical failure point is when clients manually move files and lose their Mail archive, Photos library metadata, or app licensing.
Battery life and heat
Apple states that the M1 and M2 MacBook Airs can last up to 18 hours, the M3 up to 22 hours, and the M5 15 to 18 hours, depending on the task. These are lab data under light load; real-world performance on any of them is good by laptop standards, and generational differences are smaller than marketing promises.
When acquiring a used equipment, battery health should take precedence over battery rating. Check it under System Settings → Battery → Battery Health. A cycle count of more than 800 or a health reading of less than 80% suggests that you are purchasing a laptop that will need a battery replacement soon. Consider this when setting prices.
Regarding heat, the MacBook Air has been fanless across all generations, thus it throttles under extended stress - this is a design choice, not a defect. The M3's 3nm process is slower than the M1 and M2. If you're rendering video for an hour at a time, you'll want a MacBook Pro over an Air, regardless of processor.
What you cannot upgrade later
This is the single most expensive error consumers make when purchasing Apple Silicon. Memory and storage are components of the system-on-chip package. These are not sockets. They cannot be upgraded after purchase, whether by you or us, at any price. An 8GB M1 is an 8GB machine that will last a lifetime.
The practical consequences:
- Buy more memory than you think you need. 8GB was tight in 2020 and is genuinely limiting in 2026. 16GB is the floor for anything beyond browsing.
- External storage options are available. A Thunderbolt SSD is fast enough to use immediately. On previous MacBook Pro models, a flush SD-card expansion, such as the Transcend JetDrive Lite, fits permanently in the slot without protruding.
- Resolving failed storage requires logic-board repair rather than a drive change. If the SSD in an Apple Silicon Mac fails, the board becomes the drive. This is why backups are more important on these devices than any Mac before them.
Which MacBook should you buy?
Students and everyday users
A used M1 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM. It runs macOS 27, can handle everything a coursework laptop needs, and costs a fraction of a new machine. Before making a payment, check the battery's health.
Photographers and light video editors
M2 or M3 with 16 GB. If the price difference is minor, the M3 offers real GPU advantages in Final Cut and Lightroom.
3D, gaming and heavy video
M3 or newer, preferably Pro or Max, in a MacBook Pro chassis with adequate cooling. The M3 marks the beginning of hardware ray tracing.
Anyone running local AI models
Memory bandwidth and unified memory size determine this, not CPU cores. M4 or M5 with as much RAM as you can afford.
Businesses replacing a fleet
Refurbished M2 or M3 devices with 16GB offer the best cost-per-year. We source, configure, and deploy these for businesses around the Omaha metro area; talk to us before purchasing twelve laptops at retail.
How long will each one keep be getting updates?
Apple has generally supported Macs with new operating systems for approximately seven years. The M1 debuted in late 2020 and is supported by macOS 27, which will be released in September 2026, six years later and still current. According to that pattern, an M1 should see macOS updates until about 2028, and an M3 until 2030 or beyond. Nobody outside Apple knows for sure, and anyone who tells you a specific date is speculating.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Which is better, M1, M2 or M3?
The M3 is the most powerful of the three, around 20% faster on the CPU than the M2 and 40% faster than the M1, with significantly superior graphics. However, what constitutes "better" is determined by your actions. An M1 is indistinguishable in daily usage for surfing, documents, and video calls while costing significantly less.
Q. What is the difference between the M1 and M3 chip?
Three generations of process shrinkage with a novel GPU architecture. The M3 is based on 3nm rather than 5nm, includes hardware ray tracing and Dynamic Caching, supports 24GB of RAM instead of 16GB, and transports data at 100GB/s rather than 68GB/s. In practice: similar for light tasks, but significantly faster for graphics and video.
Q. Is it worth upgrading from M1 to M3 in 2026?
Yes, if you edit videos, create 3D models, or play video games. If you only surf, write, and accept calls, no and with the M5 now shipping, an M4 is a better value upgrade if you're going to spend the money.
Q. Apple Intel versus M1, M2 and M3, how big is the gap?
Large, and the challenge is now about support rather than performance. macOS 27 Golden Gate will not install on any Intel Mac. Even the six-year-old M1 is running a supported operating system, however the 2020 Intel MacBook Pro is not.
Q. Can I upgrade the RAM or storage on an M1, M2 or M3 MacBook?
No. Both are embedded into the chip package during manufacturing and cannot be modified later. Choose your arrangement carefully, and if you run out of space, consider using extra Thunderbolt storage.
Q. Do M1, M2 and M3 MacBooks run the same software?
Yes. They all run macOS 27, native Apple Silicon apps, iPhone and iPad apps, and Intel apps, which have been translated using Rosetta 2. The difference is in speed, not compatibility with one exception: the new expressive Siri voice and sophisticated dictation require an M3 or newer with at least 12GB of memory.
Q. Which chip has the best battery life?
The M3 MacBook Air has the longest battery life, according to Apple, lasting up to 22 hours. In actuality, the differences between generations are minor, and the battery's condition is considerably more important than its generation on any secondhand computer.
Q. How do I know which chip my MacBook has?
Select Apple menu → About This Mac. The Chip line gives it its name. If that line reads Processor, you have an Intel Mac.
Q. Is a used M1 MacBook still a good buy in 2026?
Yes, under two conditions: 16GB of RAM instead of 8GB, and battery health more than 85%. Meeting both criteria, it is now the finest laptop value available.
